Juvenile Charged With 9 Counts for Role in Napoleon Schools Swatting

Jackson, MI (WKHM) — A 14-year-old has been charged in connection with threats that were made to Napoleon Community Schools on May 5.

Jackson County Prosecutor Kelsey Guernsey announced Tuesday that a juvenile petition has been authorized against the 14-year-old in connection with threats that led to the district’s lockdown and the subsequent closure of school on May 6.

The charges include:

  • False Threat of Terrorism
  • Conspiracy to Commit a False Threat of Terrorism
  • False Threat of a Bomb
  • Conspiracy to Commit a False Threat of a Bomb
  • False Public Threat
  • Conspiracy to Commit a False Public Threat
  • False Report of a Felony
  • Conspiracy to Commit a False Report of a Felony
  • Using a Computer to Commit a Crime

The lead charges are both 20-year felonies. The charges stem from the juvenile’s role in three separate threatening calls made to law enforcement agencies, which prompted Napoleon Community Schools to initiate a lockdown.

In response to the threats, 26 police units representing six different law enforcement agencies, along with 18 fire and rescue units from at least seven agencies, were dispatched to the school district.

The 14-year-old juvenile will be treated as a juvenile for the duration of his case.

The Prosecutor’s Office says they will not release the name of the juvenile respondent due to the sensitive nature of the proceedings.
