Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — Deputies from the Jackson County Office of the Sheriff (JCSO) are investigating a fatal multi-vehicle traffic crash that occurred on the afternoon of Monday, February 9.

At approximately 12:41 p.m., JCSO deputies, along with officers from the Spring Arbor Township Police Department, responded to the intersection of M-60 and Spring Arbor Road in Summit Township following reports of a collision involving a passenger vehicle and a commercial semi-truck.

Authorities say that the preliminary investigation indicates that a silver Subaru Outback was traveling westbound and approaching the traffic signal when it was struck from behind by a semi-truck.

The driver of the Subaru, a 72-year-old man from Ohio, was transported to Henry Ford Hospital, where he later succumbed to those injuries. A 71-year-old woman passenger in the Subaru was also transported to Henry Ford Hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.

The driver of the semi-truck, a 36-year-old man, reported no injuries at the scene.

Following an initial investigation at the scene, the driver of the semi was arrested and lodged at the Jackson County Jail on a charge of Moving Violation Causing Death.

Evidence gathered at the scene suggests that speed was a contributing factor in the collision. The crash remains under active investigation by the JCSO Accident Reconstruction Team.

Jackson County Sheriff Gary Schuette reminds all motorists to remain vigilant and adhere to posted speed limits, particularly when approaching intersections and heavy traffic zones.
