JACKSON, Mich. (WKHM) — The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam targeting people listed on the Sex Offender Registry and their employers.

Authorities say the caller claims to be a sheriff’s deputy and demands that victims come to the Sheriff’s Office to provide a DNA sample or face additional charges. The scammer also tries to extort money or gift cards during the call.

The Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that law enforcement will never demand money, gift cards, or DNA samples over the phone.

Anyone who receives a call like this should write down the number and immediately contact 911 to report it to local authorities.
