Michigan joins 16 other states in suing Amazon

Michigan is joining 16 other states to sue commerce giant Amazon. The Federal Trade Commission says the online retail and technology company is a monopoly that uses anti-competitive and unfair strategies to illegally maintain its power.

Attorney General Dana Nessel says, “Amazon has taken improper steps to dominate all other online superstores and online marketplaces, decreasing competition, and raised prices for everyday shoppers.”

The sweeping anti-trust lawsuit alleges Amazon uses a set of punitive and coercive tactics to unlawfully maintain its monopolies. In a statement, Amazon said, “If the FTC gets its way, the result would be fewer products to choose from, higher prices, slower deliveries for consumers, and reduced options for small businesses — the opposite of what the anti-trust law is designed to do.”
