Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — The City of Jackson says they will resume Phase 2 of the Martin Luther King Jr. Drive reconstruction project beginning March 9, continuing planned infrastructure improvements between High Street and South Street.
Phase 1 of the project, from Morrell Street to High Street, was completed in November 2025. Phase 2 is scheduled for completion in November 2026.
Improvements include full street reconstruction, replacement of water and sewer utilities, new street lighting, updated traffic signals, reconstructed sidewalks and driveway approaches, installation of a 10-foot shared-use path, and the addition of parking lanes on both sides of the street to increase convenient access to nearby businesses and properties.
During the initial phase of construction, Martin Luther King Jr. Drive will be closed to southbound traffic while remaining open to northbound traffic to maintain residential and commercial driveway access within the work zone.
Traffic patterns will be adjusted in later phases as work progresses, and updated information will be shared in advance.
Eastbound and westbound traffic on adjacent streets will remain open on either side of the construction area.
The city advises that motorists traveling through the area should follow posted detours and plan for route adjustments during active construction.
Local businesses along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive will remain open throughout construction.
Temporary closures may occur when utility work or concrete placement is taking place directly in front of a property. Residents will receive advance notice of planned disruptions from the city whenever possible.
As part of the project, the City will replace aging water, sanitary and storm sewer infrastructure. City residents should expect brief, planned interruptions to water service during connection to the new water main.
The city plans to provide notices at least one day in advance, with interruptions typically happening on weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
City of Jackson officials say weekly updates will be shared through the City’s Mass Alerts notification system and by email.
Residents can sign up at: https://www.cityofjackson.org/portal?portalpage=notifications?tab=alerts.
Residents who previously signed up for alerts through the city’s former “Code Red” system will need to resubmit their information and manage their preferences in the new Mass Alerts system.
Questions regarding construction may be directed to the Engineering Department at (517) 788-4160.
