Jackson, MI (WKHM) — On Tuesday (May 26) the Jackson Fire Department (JFD), in partnership with the American Red Cross and MI Prevention, conducted a Smoke Detector Blitz, installing over 200 smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in homes across city neighborhoods (pictures courtesy of the JFD).
JFD officials say the initiative was launched in response to the tragic fatal fire in February to commit to prevention and risk reduction.
Firefighters acted to help prevent future tragedies by ensuring more families have early warning protection against fire and carbon monoxide emergencies.
“Our top priority is making Jackson safer through prevention and education,” said Tyler Whitehead, Fire Inspector of the Jackson Fire Department. “After February’s tragedy, we knew we had to take action to reduce risk and help prevent such losses in the future. We are grateful for the support of our community partners and local businesses who made this possible.”
The blitz was successful in meeting all requests because of generous donations from Alro Steel, R. W. Mercer, Emmons Service, and Christoff and Sons Floor Covering.
Their support helped firefighters buy and install detectors in any home that needed them, so the department could help everyone who asked.
The JFD encourages residents to routinely check their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
