Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — More action has been taken by Jackson City Council in relation to the City of Jackson’s 100 Homes Program.
During Tuesday’s (March 24) City Council meeting, the council approved an item for real estate agents to receive $1,500 for each 100 Homes buyer they bring to the city.
Shane LaPorte, the city’s Director of Community Development, referenced conversations that staff has had with Sean Lefere of Norfolk Homes as part of the reasoning for this action.
LaPorte and Grant Administrator Cory Mays were asked why this move was happening now by Mayor Daniel Mahoney, with LaPorte providing the answer.
Mays discussed the possibility of an item like this being on the agenda during the March 10 City Council meeting.
The item was amended during the meeting to include all real estate agents rather than just realtors, and to clarify that the $1,500 payment to those real estate agents is a flat-fee and not a commission rate.
City staff say they want to take every step feasible to ensure these funds are expended by the deadline of December 31 of this year.
A memo from LaPorte states that failure to complete the project could result in the required repayment of remaining 100 Homes funds to the U.S. Treasury Department.
The motion passed 6-1, with Councilmember Shalanda Hunt voting no.
