Ryan Kelley, Michigan Republican gubernatorial candidate, has pleaded not guilty in charges related to the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol.

Investigators say that Kelley climbed the scaffolding of President Biden’s inauguration stage and called for others to join him.

Kelley appeared virtually in federal court on Thursday.  He argues that he was exercising his right to peaceful protest; that he and others were protesting the results and process of the 2020 election.

Kelley is accused of disruptive conduct, damaging public property and entering a restricted area without permission, which could give him up to four years in prison if convicted.
