The chief medical executive for the state health department Dr. Khaldun said that she has advised Governor Whitmer that a mask mandate for K-12 schools would help keep children safe from COVID-19 as students return to the classroom, but the Governor has yet to take any action on the recommendation.
A Governor Whitmer spokesman said that the state is urging school districts to create their own mask requirements, and that the Governor is still not considering implementing a statewide mandate.
60 Michigan school districts have issued mask requirements so far, which is around 11% of the state’s total school districts.
Last week, the Michigan health department issued data that showed masks could reduce the rate of infection by up to 75% in schools.
