First case of new COVID-19 variant detected in MI

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced Saturday that they’ve detected the first known case of the new COVID variant here in the state.

The carrier is a Washtenaw County woman who recently traveled to the United Kingdom, which is the region where the new variant is believed to have originated.

Two individuals close to the woman are quarantined at this time.  It is currently unknown if they are also infected by the variant virus.

The mutation, known as B.1.1.7., is considered more contagious than COVID-19, but is not believed to pose more serious symptoms.  B.1.1.7. has been detected in at least 16 other states so far.
