Jackson County Welcomes New Medical Director

Jackson County is set to welcome a new medical director and Jackson County Health Officer.

With the retirement of the current director, Richard Thoune, the board had to select from some 40 candidates. Chairman of the Jackson County Board Steve Shotwell said,  “As always, we try to get people in directorship positions some time with their replacement. We have a new director that staff has interviewed and making a recommendation to the board about, and Dr. (Rashimi) Travis will be hopefully appointed.”

Rashimi Travis comes with a bevy of experience. She served as the health officer for 13 years in Allegan County, and Chairman Shotwell thinks the transition should be smooth, and thanked Thoune for his service. “I look forward to a new director and moving forward with our Human Services Department. Richard has done a great job the number of years he’s been here. He’s shepherded us through many different issues, whether it be influenza outbreaks or working with our restaurants to make them better and cleaner in Jackson, and also establishing different programs and coordinating things with the City of Jackson and with the outlying county. It’s been a great experience.”
