On WKHM today, one township clerk cited health concerns and chaos as his reasons for resigning.

Mark Carpenter, Leoni Township’s Clerk announced his resignation from the position. He joined WKHM and cited continuing chaos as well as some health concerns, telling WKHM that he “doesn’t need the stress”.

“Due to our toxic environment out there; and I went to a funeral for one of my classmates this last weekend and it made me sit down with friends and family and re-evaluate where I’m at in life with medical problems I’ve been having in the last year, and I’m going to retire today as Leoni Township Clerk,” Carpenter said.

Carpenter was elected in 2018 following a recall of former clerk Michelle Manke.

“I see nothing getting better out there, it’s getting worse. I’m at a point where if they can find somebody that can hold stuff together that maybe that’s where they need to be. Right now, I don’t want to be a part of it,” he said. Carpenter said he wasn’t taking time to take care of himself; and has decided to follow his doctor’s advice.

“I wanted to thank everybody that voted for me and supported me, you’ve been a great group to work with. Way things are right now, it’s not a place for me to be,” Carpenter said.

When we asked about the biggest problems, Carpenter said, “It’d be nice if you could put your finger on just one; but I’d say the problems at the Sewage Treatment Plant I would say are number one.” He continued with something many people have echoed, “It’s like one tent shy of a full circus.”

Leoni has been at the center of many contentious issues lately, including marijuana, replacing former trustee and current county commissioner Corey Kennedy, and a late-night skirmish at the township hall on election night. The issues on election night did not involve Carpenter.
