Twelve residents of the Abbey Villas apartments were forced from their homes last week as city of Jackson inspectors declared four apartments to be unsafe. A leaky roof combined with exposed wires caused city inspectors to vacate the spaces for electrical issues. Eleven more units at Abbey Villas could be vacated as soon as this week if repairs are not made immediately. At least three other rental locations failed city inspections since last August. A seven unit building in the 700 block of Lansing Avenue was shut down in September with hundreds of violations and the Hotel Adams was found uninhabitable in August displacing 28 residents of the downtown apartments. Officials are considering revising notification policies so residents have more time to find new housing.
