The Leoni Township Board of Trustees voted 4-2 on Tuesday to approve a conditional use permit for the Kickin Brass Gun Range on N. Portage Road. Residents spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting, complaining about noise levels, the gun range’s negative effect on businesses, health effects and possible environmental contamination. The gun range was ordered to cease and desist in July of 2016. In September of 2016 the township board voted to issue another cease and desist letter to Kickin Brass. Range owner Joe Trolz did not follow that order and the township sought a court order. In November of 2016 it was ruled that the gun range was allowed to operate. The Leoni Township planning commission voted in June to recommend the permit.
