Gubernatorial candidate Gretchen Whitmer announced a Clean Water Plan today.

If elected, Whitmer seeks to get rid of Enbridge Line 5, the pipeline under the straits. Whitmer spoke to WKHM about the plan. “I’m going to create a Department of the Great Lakes and Freshwater, have a Drinking Water Ombudsman sitting at the cabinet level advocating, inspecting, working on, solutions for drinking water across Michigan.”

Whitmer seeks to eliminate corporate threats to water and drinking water sources via a sustained legal effort through the Governor’s Office.

The partisan primaries are scheduled for August 7th. Whitmer, a Democrat will have stiff competition:

DEMOCRAT PRIMARY

  • Abdul El-Sayed – former executive director of the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion
  • Shri Thanedar – entrepreneur
  • Gretchen Whitmer – former State Senator and former Ingham County Prosecutor

REPUBLICAN PRIMARY

  • Lt. Governor Brian Calley
  • State Senator Patrick Colbeck
  • Dr. Jim Hines
  • Bill Schutte – Attorney General of Michigan

LIBERTARIAN PRIMARY

  • Bill Gelineau – entrepreneur
  • John Tatar – fmr. Lt. Col. US Army Reserve Veteran, retired teacher.

The winners of the partisan primaries will join Green Party candidate Jennifer Kurland and the yet-to-be-named Natural Law Party, Working Class Party, and U.S. Taxpayers Party candidates on November 6, 2018 for the general election. The winner will replace outgoing Governor Rick Snyder.
