Jackson County Commission Chairman Steve Shotwell joined WKHM to update listeners about what’s happening with the Commission.

First, we discussed the new road paving equipment, which WKHM has dubbed “Road Fixer Five Million”. It recently took its maiden voyage on Rosehill Road. “Operations went well,” Shotwell said. “I went out and watched it operate Friday morning and look at the road surface and the underlay and it’s really going to do some very impressive things.”

The U.S. Supreme Court also declined to take the case regarding prayer to open the County Commission meetings; instead deferring to to the lower court’s ruling. “The lower court ruling (from the 6th Circuit) stands, and we can continue praying at our County Commission meetings.” said ShotwellBormuth v. County of Jackson was brought forth by resident Peter Bormuth, arguing that the Commissioner-led invocations to open meetings violated his Eighth Amendment rights.

Finally, Shotwell also reminded the community that Sunday is the Grand Farewell to Harness Racing at the Jackson County Fairgrounds. Chairman Shotwell delivered glowing praise to the team working to deliver the sendoff. “(Parks Board Chairman Mike Way) has got a crew that has been doing a yeoman’s effort, and the last day for harness racing is going to be spectacular.”

The event is Sunday, July 8th from 2pm to 6pm at the Jackson County Fairgrounds harness racing track. While the track itself is being removed, the grandstands will remain a part of the fairgrounds. The entirety of the fairgrounds is in the early stages of a massive renovation project.
