The blacktop heats up in downtown Jackson this July with the return of Gus Macker, the 3-on-3 basketball tournament. The deadline to register a team is approaching quickly as well. Commissioner Kyle Liechty said, “The registration deadline for the Gus Macker tournament is June 25th, so right now we’re seeking people…all ages 7 on up.” Those wanting to register can visit the Jackson Gus Macker site.
Liechty said that the event is kicking off with an “opening ceremony” of sorts on Friday; Gus Macker Hall of Famer and Jackson native Basil Hampton will be on hand. Saturday will feature a movie in the park, where Space Jam will be featured at Horace Blackman park downtown.
Experience Jackson is one of the presenting sponsors of the event, and Jessica Webb says that they’re looking for volunteers for the event. “We’re looking to get service groups, anything from a Rotary Club, or a high school, band boosters, football teams to come out a participate in volunteering. Then at the end of helping (the tournament), we’re going to compensate those (service groups).”
