High profile drug makers are testifying before Congress this week in Washington, as the opioid crisis takes center stage. Lawmakers on Tuesday heard from Rick VanWarner, who lost his son to opioids. Serena Marshall reports:

 

 

Closer to home the popular former City Councilman Mike Smith lost his son last year. He noted his path from prescribed drugs to heroin is a familiar one these days:

 

 

Mike Hirst, who joined WKHM last week, announced “Andy’s Place”, a drug recovery facility with two apartment buildings that is scheduled to break ground in the fall:

 

 

Councilman Smith called Hirst a great friend and much more.

 

 

We asked Hirst if he thinks things have gotten any better:
