The Jackson County Office of the Sheriff warns of a fake 911 operator calling to obtain personal information.

The Office reports:

The scammers attempted to gain personal financial information and identifying information of the resident. The fake 911 callers had told them a loved one had been involved in automobile accident and they needed to verify who they were. The matter became suspicious when things like social security numbers were requested. The scammers used a “spoofing” tool or app to make it appear they were calling from 911.

The Sheriff’s Office is reminding everyone 911 operators may contact you at the request of Police/Fire responders in the field. Operators may ask you for things like addresses, full names and date of births but never social security numbers or personal financial information or insurance information. If ever in doubt you can always disconnect and redial 911 to verify it is actually coming from Jackson County Central Dispatch.”

The Office also indicates that operators calling from 911 to a residence will NEVER appear as 911. They will show up as a 7-digit number, restricted, or blocked.
