See Jackson Michigan from a “Grand” perspective with GREAT

Steve Ferency  |  Jackson, MI –  Have you ever wanted to see Jackson and surrounding areas from the Grand River from a canoe or kayak?  Did you know that you can take trips doing just that?  The Grand River Environmental Action Team (GREAT) was founded in 1990 and is a local 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection of and restoration of the Upper Grand River Watershed in Jackson County of south central Michigan.

One of the most serene places to see the Grand River is right in our own back yard and through our downtown.  If things progress as planned we could be seeing recreational waterways opening that could take you on a 250 mile trip from Jackson to Grand Haven, MI.  Now, if you’re like me, a 250 mile trip seems a bit far for my physical abilities but a 1 1/2 hour trip through Jackson is more my style.   Can you imagine a stop off at the Grand River Brewery as you tour through?  Or better yet, Jackson being a destination for tourists seeking that urban kayak and canoe tour.  Word on the streets that something is brewing that will begin the process of just that.

GREAT offers trips to suite anyone who has the desire to relax on the calming waters of the river as you see our area from a different perspective.  All paddle events are open to the public.  To reserve a kayak or canoe (no charge) and to check trip status due to weather status, call GREAT 517 416-4234 or check http://www.great-mi.org.

Additionally, GREAT organizes clean-up activities & monthly public canoe outings to create environmental awareness.  “Almost everything imaginable has been pulled out of the river”, said Kenny Price, President of GREAT.  The last six years, GREAT has been helped by the J.R.O.T.C. at the Career Center.  A record number of 137 people came out in 2013 to clean the Grand River. GREAT along with its board, members, and friends will continue to clean the river, trying to make it a great asset to the citizens of Jackson County.

YOU CAN HELP!!!   Join the Annual Grand River Clean-up on September 10th (Sat.) 9 AM to 2 PM.  Meet at the CMS Energy band shell off Cooper St. in Downtown Jackson.  Contact GREAT for more information.  No need to reserve a boat as GREAT and other canoes will be available. Dress to be in or near the river. Tools and lunch provided.

Expect to see much more in the way of information with this developing story.  It’s only the beginning.
