Most of the media attention from Tuesday’s City Council meeting went to the discrimination ordinances, but the proposed change to the City Charter regarding the position of Treasurer had the interest of city followers piqued.

Traditionally, the position of Treasurer has been elected, but with the retirement of embattled former Treasurer Randy Wrozek, the council was forced to appoint someone (former Mayor Martin Griffin) to the position for the remainder of Wrozek’s current term. “The Charter Review Committee had proposed that the Treasurer should be recommended by the City Manager, that the City Council should appoint the Treasurer, and that the City Treasurer would then serve at the discretion of the City Manager. The council from time to time could request information on city funds from the treasurer.” Dobies said. This proposal is something that does not sit well with him, however. Dobies stated that he was not fond of how the change was brought to council. “I wasn’t really sold on the City Manager recommending someone to council that council would then confirm but then put back under the control of the City Manager for any sort of firing or disciplinary purposes.” Dobies said. “I think it was kind of a hybrid between an outright appointment like we would have with the City Clerk and a simple Department Head classification.”
