10 Injured In Leoni Twp. Train Accident

Wednesday morning emergency responders from all over Jackson County responded to a train derailment in Leoni Township.  The accident happened at Portage and E. Michigan Ave when a Westbound Amtrak train struck a semitrailer.  WKHM spoke with Director Mike Jester from the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety.

The driver of the semi was 68 David Zimmer from Saugerties, New York.  Jester said before today he was not aware of a problem of lowboy trailers getting stuck at that crossing.  At the scene neighbors said they have witnessed similar trailers getting stuck at that location before.  Jester told WKHM he spoke with representatives from the Jackson County Road Commission and Norfolk Southern at the scene and suggested they look into the issue.  Norfolk Southern is responsible for maintaining that crossing.  Jester said trains always have the right of way, the investigation is continuing and no citations have been issued at this point.
